Social media keeps us connected to nearly everyone we know—and plenty of people we don’t. We can follow the lives of family and friends, check in from time to time, and reassure ourselves that everyone seems fine.
But seeing someone’s post is not the same as hearing their voice. A comment is not a phone call, and a reaction button cannot replace sitting beside someone when life becomes frightening.
“While We’re Still Here” began with a post from a lifelong friend. She didn’t directly describe her struggle with cancer, but I understood what she was trying to say. I could hear what lived between the words: the fear, the exhaustion, and the need to be seen. Her post stayed with me, and the song was born.
Soon afterward, another friend shared that her sister was also facing cancer. It saddened me to think about what they were enduring—and to wonder whether they had the support they needed. Serious illness reaches far beyond the body. It takes a physical, mental, and emotional toll, while bringing our mortality much closer than we are ever prepared for.
We often assume there will be more time: time to call, time to visit, time to laugh together, and time to say what matters. But love should not be postponed until a crisis—or expressed only after someone is gone.
This song is my reminder to reach beyond the screen. Call the person. Make the visit. Laugh harder. Love bigger. Don’t wait.
